3 Occupational Health Services That Are Big Onsite Money Savers

Every employer likes to save time and money, but are you taking advantage of some of the best ways you can do that? A real game changer for an employer can be the delivery of occupational health services through a worksite health center. A successful onsite occupational health program will significantly reduce both lost work time and your claims costs. From drug testing to physical therapy, employees are just as happy with the convenience of onsite services as their employers are with the savings. And healthy adaptations to the work environment – guided by clinicians – can improve both safety and productivity.

Choose to implement a few services, or a full occupational health program onsite including:

  • Injury care
  • Injury case management
  • Return-to-work programs
  • Physical therapy
  • Fit for duty exams
  • Pre-employment screens
  • Drug testing and DOT testing
  • OSHA mandated surveillance
  • Ergonomic assessments
  • Worksite analysis

These programs continue growing in popularity. To understand why, see the easiest three ways you can save money with an onsite occupational health program for your employees!

1. Pre-Employment, DOT Screens, and More

One very straightforward way to save money is to bring work-related lab testing, fit for duty exams and injury assessments in-house. It’s also a major convenience that’s highly appreciated by employees.

For example, a hospital in suburban Virginia with 2,000 employees was processing 100 pre-employment screenings every month. For a new hire, the pre-employment process required getting a drug screening in one location, a physical assessment in another location, lab tests somewhere else and then back to the hospital to turn in paperwork. The hospital – a Healthstat client – transitioned these services to their worksite health center. Pre-employment screenings are now accomplished in a single stop – and at more than 80% savings to the hospital.

The hospital also does about 90 injury assessments a year among current employees. These employees had all been going straight to the ER where they could be assessed without an appointment. With the opening of the employee worksite health center, most injuries could instead be managed there with far less waiting and expense. Between pre-employment screenings and injury assessments, the hospital’s savings are approaching $1M annually.

2. Ergonomic Assessments

At Healthstat, we believe you can either wait for health concerns—injury, sickness, and chronic conditions—to come knocking on your door, or you can go out and address them head-on and avoid the harsh reality of productivity losses and waning morale.

A manufacturer (and new Healthstat client) was experiencing an occupational health crisis: three recordable injuries a day. With management on board, Healthstat’s occupational health assessment team went onto the production floor to listen to workers down the line. People were glad to be heard. They helped the assessment team get to the bottom of where and how injuries were occurring. The result? A 92% reduction in the recordable injury rate.

This experience reflects a positive trend in effective onsite programs. They extend the health center’s reach beyond its own four walls. Ergonomic assessments and worksite analyses help ensure employee safety and comfort. The worksite health center focuses on preventing as well as treating repetitive motion injury and musculoskeletal injury. It can also reinforce action plans that forestall minor and major events.

3. Workers' Comp Case Management

Picture a situation in which an on-the-job injury does occurs and your employee is on their own to manage their emergency care and recovery. The experience can be frightening, decisions are often made without optimal support and the care that leads to recovery is not well coordinated. The employee stays out of work and on reduced wages longer than necessary.

Now picture the same scenario, but with an occupational health provider who acts as an advocate and resource to help the employee and their family through the trauma. When the injury occurs, the hospital’s medical team is given immediate information about the employee and the worksite. They can target the treatment plan without delay. Picture having a medical team to stand by the employee and their family through medical appointments, surgeries and physical therapy sessions.

The kind of high tech, high touch approach used by Healthstat will ensure your employees get the care they need and deserve. That’s how we can guarantee we’ll lower your claims costs. If an on-the-job injury does happen, your employee will have an advocate and a care coordinator. Ultimately, this gets people back to work sooner.

Complete, Confidential Medical Records

The fragmentation of medical records can also be a barrier to top-level care. Employers have access to work-related medical information, but personal health information must be kept confidential. Fortunately, Healthstat’s medical records system allows our clinicians to see the complete patient history. While an employer has access to work-related data only, our clinicians see a patient’s complete health and wellness picture. It’s a huge advantage that lets us provide a better patient experience and closer case management. In turn, the occupational health services we deliver yield exceptional savings.

An onsite occupational health program can bring a perfect alignment of employer and employee goals to the workplace. Contact Healthstat today to learn more about a program designed specifically to keep your employees healthy, productive and on the job!
