3 Occupational Health Services that are Big Onsite Money Savers

Every employer likes to save time and money, but are you taking advantage of some of the best ways you can do that? One very straightforward way to save money is to bring work-related lab testing, fit for duty exams and injury assessments in-house. It’s also a major convenience that’s highly appreciated by employees.

For example, a hospital in suburban Virginia with 2,000 employees was processing 100 pre-employment screenings every month. For a new hire, the pre-employment process required getting a drug screening in one location, a physical assessment in another location, lab tests somewhere else and then back to the hospital to turn in paperwork. The hospital – a Healthstat client – transitioned these services to their onsite clinic. Pre-employment screenings are now accomplished in a single stop – and at more than 80% savings to the hospital.

The hospital also does about 90 injury assessments a year among current employees. They had all been going straight to the ER where they could be assessed without an appointment. Healthstat’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Phillip Franklin, likes to say “you can be a pitcher or you can be a catcher. The catcher sits inside waiting for people to come to them, but pitchers go out and win the game.” Dr. Franklin worked for a manufacturer that had been seeing 3 recordable injuries a day.
