The First 42 Steps Are The Hardest : Walking The Talk At Work


Healthstat clients are as diverse and individual as each of their locations, spanning more than 300 workplaces across 30+ states. Just the same, a shared priority is rising to the top of their corporate health and wellness consideration: sitting less, walking more.

Let’s look at our own example. In Charlotte, NC – home to Healthstat’s corporate offices – we typically have moderate weather. Opportunities abound to be active outdoors all year round…unless you’re working inside all day. Just like so many of the places across the country where Healthstat clinic participants live and work, we seem to have fewer and fewer naturally occurring opportunities to get ourselves in motion during the course of our real-life workdays. We do virtually every errand by car - dropping the kids at daycare, picking up groceries, getting to work...

But here’s the thing. It’s morning. You’ve dispensed with your first responsibilities and you’ve gotten yourself to work. Park your car and walk inside your building and right away you face a life-altering decision: elevator or stairs?

Most people we are working to engage in a corporate wellness program gravitate first to the elevator. Most people will circle around hoping for the closer parking spot. But what if we chose to walk around the outside of the building a time or two instead? What if we made our default choice taking the stairs?

Here at Healthstat we are seeing the positive effects on our own well-being of learning to walk the talk. When you see your manager hoofing it around the outside of the building, or your CEO passes by your workstation having a walking meeting, you start to understand that being more physically active throughout the day is a value the company promotes. When your co-worker heads to the staircase and encourages you to come along, it starts feeling like the better choice. With a c’mon wave of the hand, you begin feeling like friends, heading up and out of your rut together. We know that walking is very good for you. We know that prolonged sitting is very bad for you. The workplace connects the workforce to new opportunities for increasing motion throughout the day. The workplace shows us ways to put knowledge into action to improve our well-being.

Take it from us - the first 42 steps are the hardest! That’s how many stairs lead to Healthstat’s 3rd floor corporate offices. As Healthstat grows by leaps and bounds, we’ve expanded to the 4th floor of our corporate offices as well. We are laughing together at the fact that our legs still seem to want to stop at 3. No worries, we will be used to it soon. Younger and older, thicker and thinner, we can all keep it moving. Whatever your current abilities, small bursts of energy throughout the day will re-energize your batteries and reboot your brain. And that will keep you healthier and happier on the job.
